FDA Approves Alopecia Treatment

Oral tablet Olumiant targets the entire body.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement on Monday announcing that they have approved Olumant as a full-body treatment for alopecia areata. Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack its own hair follicles, causing hair to fall out either in patches or all over the body. Olumant is the first FDA-approved treatment to address the entire body and not just localized areas of alopecia.

“Access to safe and effective treatment options is crucial for the significant number of Americans affected by severe alopecia,” Kendall Marcus, the director of the Division of Dermatology and Dentistry in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in the release. “Today’s approval will help fulfill a significant unmet need for patients with severe alopecia areata.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the effectiveness of the new oral medication to treat Americans with Alopecia.
  • For FDA officials as they research and review therapies and medications for illnesses and conditions.
  • That Director Marcus oversees his FDA division with wisdom and understanding.
